McGraw School praised for PBIS program; four state track champions recognized

McGraw principal Shan Shaw outlined the school's PBIS framework, data and recognition systems; the board honored four Hampden Academy athletes who won state titles and an athlete who committed to the University of New England.
At the RSU 22 board meeting principal Shan Shaw presented McGraw School's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, explaining its tiered approach, data-driven fidelity checks and the school's use of positive acknowledgements such as "McGraw Paws" and "Paw Power" referrals.
"PBIS is an evidence-based framework," Shaw said, describing tier one (universal supports), tier two (targeted supports) and tier three (individualized supports). She told the board the school collects student-behavior and attendance data, uses an external evaluator for fidelity monitoring and recently was invited to present at a regional PBIS conference as one of three schools in the state selected.
Shaw outlined concrete practices used at McGraw: clear, school-wide expectations (be safe, be responsible, be respectful), a positive acknowledgement system connected to those expectations, classroom regulation spaces, and a universal screener administered three times a year to identify students who may need supports. She said the school reported a record month of Paw Power referrals and will expand advanced-tier interventions next year.
Earlier in the meeting the board recognized Hampden Academy indoor track achievements: head coach Jason Cash and assistant coach Mike Ditzel introduced a 4x200 relay team (Kelsey Ball, Bre Curtis, Maddie DeCentes and Addie Alley) that won the Class A state relay and contributed to the girls team's second-place finish at state. Coach Cash said the relay time was one of the fastest recorded historically and that Addie Alley also won an individual state championship in the 800.
"We're very proud of you," a board member told the athletes, who said teamwork, trust and practice led to their success. Maddie DeCentes announced she has committed to the University of New England and the board recognized graduating student-athletes during the meeting.
The PBIS presentation and student recognitions were followed by routine district business including personnel announcements and adoption of the 2026-27 school calendar.
