Administrators told the board that Parkview is reducing second grade from five to four sections and Northstar is reducing fourth and sixth grades; Laurentian also trimmed a sixth-grade section. The district reported combined K–6 averages for Parkview/Northstar rising from about 22.01 students per class this year to an estimated 24.94 next year; Laurentian’s average was projected to increase slightly from 22.24 to 22.79. Board members pressed for a grade-by-grade breakdown and indicated they would want to cap enrollments if incoming July/August registrations increase sections above budgeted levels.
Staff outlined how internal shifts and hiring decisions were being used to cover openings. Some specialist and intervention positions will be funded through Title I, ADS and a language grant that allowed the district to restore a language offering. Special-education placements and a continued search for a school psychologist were discussed; Stephanie Agen said the district had raised the psychologist salary to $110,000 but has still had difficulty filling the role.
The board asked administrators to circulate the detailed staffing sheet and to highlight any grades with significantly increased class sizes; administrators said they would bring back the grade-level breakdown and noted that additional enrollments later in summer could trigger requests for more staffing.
What happens next: Administrators will send the detailed grade-by-grade staffing and class-size breakdown to board members and may return to the board if fall enrollments justify adding sections or FTE.
