Sumner County board previews rezonings that would move about 200 elementary students, centralize some pre‑K

Sumner County School Board staff on May 12 presented proposed attendance‑zone changes that would shift about 200 elementary students and roughly 95–100 middle school students among a cluster of Gallatin‑area schools, while asking the board to approve a short‑term plan to centralize some pre‑K classrooms.

Dr. Lford told the board the proposal is meant to manage growth and transportation: starting in the 2026–27 school year, students in the Beth Page Elementary rezoning area would feed West Morland Middle and West Morland High School, while current Beth Page students already enrolled at Schaefer Middle School or Gallatin High School could remain if families provide transportation. "All Beth Page Elementary students will attend West Morland Middle School and West Morland High School," Dr. Lford said, adding that out‑of‑zone requests tied to parental transportation would be approved to reduce disruption for working families.

Staff said the change would consolidate several bus routes and reduce long wait times on the Gallatin cluster route; Jeremy from transportation supplied a bus‑count figure of about 10 riders on the route who currently travel into Gallatin. The presenter emphasized school capacity is not the primary constraint and that transportation logistics and feeder‑pattern cleanup motivated the timing.

The meeting also addressed a separate cluster change affecting Burris (presented as Burus/Buris in earlier materials) Elementary and Knox/Hunter feeders tied to a multi‑year Hendersonville bridge and intersection reconstruction. Dr. Lford described the city of Hendersonville project as necessary but disruptive for 12–18 months, and said the district is coordinating with local officials to reduce impact on morning drop‑off and afternoon pickup.

Board members raised typical concerns during the Q&A: sibling exceptions, grandfathering, athletic eligibility and how transfers affect sports eligibility. Dr. Lford said the district will honor sibling requests and existing lottery/transfer practices where families provide transportation, and that state transfer rules (TWSAA) create specific eligibility outcomes when rezones move a student’s residence or feeder path.

On pre‑K, staff proposed centralizing several pre‑K classrooms as a short‑term measure to relieve overcrowded schools (Station Camp Elementary and others), improve collaboration among pre‑K teachers and concentrate special‑education and literacy resources. Dr. Lford called the pre‑K consolidation a stop‑gap until the district finds a longer‑term site: "It makes a better experience for our pre‑K students," he said, while acknowledging some parents may find the change hard to accept.

Staff outlined next steps: maps and detailed boundary documents will be published for families before the next board meeting, internal teacher transfer interest forms will open May 13–19 if the board approves the rezones, and the board is scheduled to vote on the zoning changes at its next meeting, one board member confirmed.
