Valdez board approves $147,991 purchase to convert rifle range into weight room

The Valdez City School District board voted to approve a $147,991 purchase to convert the district's existing rifle range into a strength and weight-training room.

Superintendent Jason Weber explained the district solicited at least three vendor quotes and recommended the mid-range option, saying lower-cost equipment had mixed reviews and might not withstand school and potential community use. The purchase is intended to support high-school strength programs, free space in other buildings and provide a potential after-hours community resource.

"We requested information from at least three different vendors," Weber said. "The lower vendor's product is probably not going to withstand the usage that we're going to put it under." He added the vendor selected provided the most complete shipping quote and will assist with final installation.

Board discussion touched on logistics: the district will use interlocking flooring (so equipment can be moved during a future remodel), avoid anchoring to concrete, and repaint and modify the space this summer. Board members noted the rifle range is underutilized and welcomed repurposing the 2,000-square-foot space for broader student use.

On the funding connection to insurance pressures, Weber said district reserve accounts are restricted and cannot be reallocated to pay recurring benefits costs; the purchase uses project-appropriate funds and reserves that are permissible for capital equipment and not for payroll or benefits.

The motion passed with six yays and one undetermined vote recorded by the clerk.
