Mill Valley board hears LCAP update emphasizing staffing, tiered supports and device evaluation

District staff presented the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) mid-cycle update at the May 14 Mill Valley School District board meeting, walking trustees through four goals: (1) required core programming and staffing, (2) multi-tiered systems of support, (3) communications and community engagement, and (4) transparency in budget development and facilities planning.
The presenter (identified in the record as Kate) told trustees the district typically receives somewhere between $400,000 and $500,000 in supplemental state grants to support unduplicated students and described how the LCAP specifies how those funds are targeted. Goal-by-goal highlights included early enrollment tracking to better align staffing and maintain small class sizes where possible; expanded use of instructional assistants and targeted learning labs; consolidated professional-development days to address middle-school construction and planning; implementation of DIBELS literacy screening in grades K–5 in compliance with state early-reading screening law; and efforts to add counseling capacity and hire behaviorists internally rather than contract out.
Staff also said the district launched a new website, plans to re-establish advisory committees including CFAC and a citizen bond oversight committee for modernization projects, and is considering a communications audit to improve family reach. On facilities and budget, the district reported continued oversight by the budget advisory committee and progress on modernization and safety enhancements; trustees were told a June meeting will include official LCAP annual updates, the local indicators presentation and a public hearing on the plan and budget.
Board members asked clarifying questions about middle-school scheduling, the math adoption timeline and parent participation in pilot committees. No formal LCAP approval was recorded at the May 14 meeting; the item will return in June for the required hearing and action.
