La Crosse County vector-control officer warns Vernon County board that program may be discontinued

Dave Geske, Vector Control Manager for the La Crosse County Health Department, told the Vernon County Board of Health on Oct. 10 that the county’s vector-control program — active since the 1980s — may be discontinued in 2018 and that he was "very concerned" the diseases the program monitors could increase if it ends. Geske cited ongoing concerns about La Crosse encephalitis and new threats such as Zika as reasons for alarm.
The board thanked Geske for his years of work reducing mosquito habitat and controlling mosquito-borne disease. Chair JoAnn Nickelatti and other board members discussed options and asked staff to invite Geske to speak before the Vernon County Board of Supervisors so supervisors can consider asking La Crosse County to reconsider any decision to end the program.
The board did not take a formal vote on the program’s future at the Oct. 10 meeting. The discussion served as a notice to county leaders and the public that discontinuation could increase local disease risk and may require intergovernmental outreach if La Crosse County proceeds.
