Kossuth County veterans commission reviews caseload, approves minutes

The Kossuth County Commission of Veterans Affairs met April 9, 2026, in Conference Room 110 at the Courthouse Annex in Algona. Chair Troy Brandt called the meeting to order at 4:40 p.m.; the commission observed the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for POW/MIA.
Director Daniel D. Green presented monthly caseload and system activity figures. The minutes state the county maintains 1,288 total veteran records and 1,029 active records, with 21 open claims in the Department of Veterans Affairs VBMS system and 18 claims undergoing development. The minutes also list one pending health-care application and two congressional submissions year-to-date.
Financial and workload reports from the VETPRO system were reviewed. Reported February figures included a monthly award of $7,236.38 and retro payments of $8,105.12; year-to-date monthly awards and retro payments were listed as $10,837.72 and $12,696.87, respectively. Cumulative totals shown in the minutes include system veteran compensation cumulative $901,752.40 and retro $3,242,915.00; system spouse DIC cumulative $52,383.99 and retro $256,390.80. The commission noted that some totals will be adjusted for transfers, deaths and newly adjudicated claims.
The commission reviewed handouts and training updates. The minutes record completion of Iowa American Legion training (Feb. 14, 2026) and outreach including a VA mobile medical unit visit on March 2. Staff reported that VETPRO reports are a work in progress because of limited reporting features.
On a procedural motion, Commissioner James Hartshorn moved to approve the previous monthly meeting minutes; Commissioner Kevin Molsberry seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 6:28 p.m.
