Maple Valley council continues Comprehensive Plan work, hears multiple city updates

The Maple Valley City Council on Oct. 28 continued discussion of the Comprehensive Plan and received a series of informational updates from staff without final action.
Community Development Manager Matt Torpey presented recent updates to the Comprehensive Plan and associated code; City Attorney Jeff Taraday provided clarifications on some items. The council did not adopt final code changes and left the matter open for further review.
Torpey also introduced SB 5290 permit process and review timelines as an informational item. Mayor Sean P. Kelly reviewed proposed 2025 council assignments; council members approved returning the finalized assignments on the Consent Calendar at the next regular business meeting rather than taking final action that night.
City Manager Laura Philpot reported multiple operational updates: the Greater Maple Valley Area Council is working on a subarea plan connected to King County Comprehensive Plan implementation; the Lake Wilderness Golf Course clubhouse project is out to bid with a bid opening scheduled for Nov. 22; the Kindness Connects program launched at the Farmers Market with participation from all Tahoma schools and community partners and a billboard to be installed; and city staff took part in a Tahoma High School Career Fair.
Mayor Kelly proposed setting an annual council retreat date; City Manager Philpot will circulate proposed dates. Councilmember Victoria Schroff also noted a developer meeting about downtown planning and asked staff to schedule a future discussion about rotating councilmembers on and off committees in Q1 2025. Councilmember Syd Dawson reported that the State Auditor’s Office audit has begun; no council-level policy changes were recorded that evening.
The meeting closed with a motion to extend until 9:15 p.m., which carried 6-0, and an announcement of a special regular business meeting scheduled for Nov. 12, 2024, at Lake Wilderness Lodge.
