Springfield Fire Department reinstates residential Knox Box loaner program
Summary
After a council budget amendment, the Springfield Fire Department has more than 100 residential Knox Box units available through a loaner program to improve firefighter access and reduce property damage; the department will publicize eligibility and registration.
Chief Zumo told the City Council on May 19 that the Springfield Fire Department has reinstated a residential Knox Box loaner program funded in part by a recent budget amendment. The department has obtained more than 100 loaner units and will prioritize distribution to residents who would not otherwise be able to afford a unit.
Chief Zumo said the program supports community risk reduction by allowing firefighters to gain rapid entry during emergencies while reducing unnecessary property damage. He detailed that residential units typically retail between about $250 and $600 and recommended that residents who can afford to purchase a unit do so and register it with the fire department.
The department will publish program details, eligibility and instructions via social media and the council received handouts with additional information. Chief Zumo also promoted an upcoming open house and training opportunities at the fire training facility.
