South Boston YMCA highlights programs, seeks continued county support

Olivia Epps, executive director of the South Boston YMCA (part of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads), briefed the Halifax County Finance Committee April 2 on membership, community programming and a funding request to maintain and expand services.
Epps said the YMCA serves roughly 4,200 active members across 1,819 membership units, with many members living outside town limits. She described the Impact Fund, which subsidizes more than 160 Open Doors memberships for low-income individuals and families and supports discounts for childcare and other programs. The Impact Fund aims to raise $45,000 this year to sustain those subsidies.
The YMCA outlined programs including Silver Sneakers classes for older adults, the Safety Around Water program for pre-K students taught in partnership with schools, swim lessons, seasonal sports, and free community events such as Healthy Kids Day. Epps said the YMCA is working to reinstate summer camp and before/after-school care and is exploring partnerships with local parks and recreation departments to streamline programming.
At the meeting Supervisor D. J. Oakes said he favored increasing the county contribution from last year’s $15,000 to $20,000, which the committee discussed as a possible allocation. The Finance Committee did not finalize that contribution at the meeting; staff indicated non-departmental allocations will be revisited when revenue estimates are complete.
