Commissioner proposes up to yearlong moratorium on data center development while county drafts regulations

"Basically, it's gonna, revolve around asking for a moratorium on the development of data centers for probably a period of up to 1 year while the regulations are being developed or created by this commission," the commissioner said, and asked County Attorney Ben to draft appropriate wording for the resolution so the commission would not be "stuck in a corner" by poorly drafted language.
The commissioner framed the request as a pause to allow the county time to study and put rules in place rather than a permanent ban. He said the moratorium would buy time for the commission to develop regulations and noted staff and fellow commissioners had been gathering background information.
Commissioners agreed to have the county attorney prepare draft language and to place the item for future consideration; no formal resolution was adopted at the work session. The proposal also prompted a separate request that the grant writer apply for a Coaca R C and D grant (up to $20,000) to support a parks project.
The commission did not vote on the moratorium during the work session; the next step is for staff and legal counsel to draft proposed language for the commission to review.
