Council approves consent items, airport projects, engine repairs and fireworks code changes

Phoenix City Council members voted Wednesday to approve a broad set of consent and action items spanning public art, contracts, infrastructure and public-safety code changes.

Council approved the mayor and council nominations and a batch of consent items (items 2–14) and took a separate 'no recommendation' action on a liquor license item. The council then approved a settlement of claim tied to street-safety work (item 20) after Streets Department staff reviewed work done near a school and described planned HAWK-signal construction.

Other approvals included an artwork package tied to Cesar Chavez (item 30), a contract with Keys to Change for operations at a human services campus (item 32), and authorization of an emergency engine-repair contract with Pratt & Whitney (item 46) to cover overhaul work for aviation assets used in rescue operations. Councilwoman Hernandez voted no on item 46; other members recorded yes votes.

The council also approved infrastructure items for Sky Harbor and Goodyear airports (item 50 and item 53). Public commenter Cesar Curran urged workforce standards and local-hiring commitments for the Phoenix–Goodyear apron and taxiway connector project; the council approved the project. A roadway-safety action plan (item 61) and amendments to the City Code on consumer fireworks (items 80 and 81) passed as well, with members citing public-safety and fire-risk concerns.
