Commission hears support for Smart Bank brownfield redevelopment downtown

The commission heard a briefing supporting a resolution to consent to a brownfield development tax statement for a Smart Bank downtown redevelopment.
A presenter (speaker 11) described the Brownfield program as a redevelopment tool that can use local sales, use and property tax abatements and noted liability protections and strict environmental due diligence attached to the program. "With a $3,000,000 building, as well as 9 new jobs and each paying $60,000 or more, that money going back into your economy," the presenter said.
Dixon (speaker 2) called this the fourteenth project using the brownfield program in the region and said, "thanks to the commission and the city of Dothan, we've done close to about, right about a $150,000,000 of investment, about 500 jobs with this." He added that repurposing challenged sites increases surrounding property values and catalyzes further investment.
A commission member and a meeting participant offered praise for the Chamber and the program; the chair then asked whether there were objections to placing the item on the agenda and none were raised.
