Commissioners confirm multiple advisory-board appointments and discuss attendance expectations

At the March 10 work session the Board of County Commissioners agreed by consensus to fill numerous advisory-board and commission seats and discussed attendance and pre-appointment training requirements for several bodies.
Deputy Clerk Tara May introduced multiple appointment items and noted statutory and board training requirements for certain committees. On the Adult Care Home & Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee she said recommended reappointments had completed pre-appointment training and would be recommended for one-year preliminary terms; she also said other applicants had not finished mandatory training and were not eligible for appointment. "The individuals missed two out of three possible meetings, but they are also performing a lot of work outside of the meetings," May said when commissioners asked about attendance for nominees on one committee.
On Arts Commission appointments commissioners debated attendance records before agreeing by consensus to appoint Francesca Talenti, Denise Duffy and Pascal Moore and to reappoint others. Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford opposed reappointment of one nominee on attendance grounds; commissioners split on that candidate’s reappointment but ultimately appointed alternate nominees by consensus.
The Board also appointed members to the Board of Equalization and Review (Elizabeth Young and Patrick Mulkey), the Historic Preservation Commission (reappointing Carol Ann Lewald), the Board of Adjustment (appointing Jeff Scott and continuing outreach for an additional At-Large seat), the Parks and Recreation Council (appointing Louise Flinn and reappointing youth delegate Navya Sharma), and the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (appointing Sanai Bryant as a person under 21). Several boards still show vacancies in specified municipal slots.
No contested roll-call votes were recorded for the appointments; most decisions were recorded as "agreed by consensus." The session ended when Commissioner Earl McKee moved, Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford seconded, and the board voted unanimously to adjourn at 9:20 p.m.
