Morris County commissioners discuss bridge collapse, MUA solid-waste hearing and infrastructure updates

During its March work session the Morris County Board of County Commissioners heard updates on infrastructure and county operations, including a collapsed bridge culvert, planned water-main work and an upcoming public hearing on a Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) amendment to the county solid-waste plan.

The chair reported that Bridge No. 258, a stone-arch culvert on Poggersville Road in Chesterton Township, collapsed on March 10; repairs were under way and a press release had been issued. The chair also said utility connections have been completed for the county’s public-safety complex expansion.

A commissioner who oversees utilities said heavy winter leaks prompted large water sales to Randolph and Danville and that phase 1 construction for a 24-inch water-main replacement in Randolph is expected to begin in early 2026. That official also updated the board on solid-waste operations and promoted a river-cleanup volunteer event scheduled for March 22 in Morristown.

The board confirmed a public hearing on an MUA amendment to the county solid-waste plan will be held at a future regular meeting. Another commissioner summarized items on the agenda including a contract amendment for digital-literacy training, a farm-innovation grant and workforce-development procedures tied to the New Jersey Department of Labor.

Other updates included the county’s adoption of the 2027 unified planning work program and an information briefing on FIFA World Cup transit preparations for the region. Department heads reported on courthouse foundation work and IT systems status. Commissioners also reviewed upcoming events such as the county’s Memorial Day observance on May 20 and local ribbon-cutting and veterans ceremonies.

The work session concluded with a motion to adjourn and the board recessed for photographs before moving to other agenda items.
