The Boxborough Select Board approved acceptance of two annual fire‑safety grants May 11, voting unanimously to accept $5,787.15 for student fire‑safety education and $2,645.62 for senior safety and home‑visit supplies.
Captain Malinowski (Jason) told the board the student grant supports programming in local schools and the senior grant funds home safety visits and purchase of supplies such as batteries and smoke‑detector replacement parts. “These are annual grants offered by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services,” he said, and noted the grants have been received in the town for roughly the last 20 years.
Jason explained that, unlike many local grants, the town receives the money once the contract is executed and then reports and reconciles expenditures; any unspent funds must be returned. Chief Kibla thanked Captain Malinowski for leading the extensive application work, noting the process is increasingly complex and time‑consuming despite the modest dollar amounts.
The board moved and unanimously approved acceptance of both awards.
