San Antonio code panel orders multiple demolitions, grants continuance in one case

The City of San Antonio Code Enforcement hearing on Feb. 18 ordered demolitions or cleanup for several properties the department says are unsafe and in violation of municipal code.

Staff from the Development Services Department presented photographs, inspection histories and code citations for multiple single-family properties with fire damage, severe structural decay and repeated lack of required permits. Officials repeatedly cited Chapter 6, Article 8 (dangerous structures) in their recommendations.

Cynthia Santana and other dangerous-structures officers described structural collapses, missing walls, significant fire damage and ongoing trespassing or illegal activity at several addresses. Officer Peña said officers had found stolen-vehicle parts and narcotics-related activity at one site, which factored into staff’s urgency to secure or remove the structures.

The board took separate actions on listed properties: it declared 214 Brook Street a public nuisance and ordered demolition (motion passed 5–2); it approved a continuance/restart for 52–46 Village Crest requiring a notarized power of attorney, a complete scope-of-work, a fire-department report and measures to secure the principal structure (motion passed 6–1); and it voted unanimously on demolition orders or findings of public nuisance for 267 North Saint Gabriel, 165 Stripling, 711 West Geralt Avenue and 256 Brig Street.

Members who cast recorded votes on at least one motion included Anne Wayner, Paul Hernández, Dora Solís, Robert Benkey (mover on several motions), Ryan Baldwin and others listed in the hearing. Staff said the demolition orders generally allow 30 days for compliance or city-initiated demolition and cleanup.

Officials also noted administrative items: a forthcoming financial report for the department expected April 6; personnel realignments within code enforcement; and vacancy recruitment.
