The Martinsville City School Board authorized the district to apply for Title III federal funding to support students classified as English learners.
Dr. Long asked for permission to apply and said the figure in the packet had been adjusted from $19,000 to $16,454.07 because certain immigrant-related funds were not guaranteed for next year. She said the funds would finance supplemental programs and services, materials, professional development and stipends, and that the district currently serves 173 English learners (127 identified as 'active' plus others in monitoring).
After the presentation the board chair moved to allow the application; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Dr. Long noted use of funds includes an EL parent liaison stipend and parent engagement activities.
The board did not adopt a budget allocation at the meeting; the vote authorized submission of the grant application.
