Commissioners approve payroll timing change, hire CDL operator; county engineer updates road work

At its Feb. 9 meeting the Lamar County Commission voted to move part-time employees onto the same payroll schedule used for full-time staff, a change officials said will simplify timekeeping and reduce payroll lag. Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the change; the meeting record did not include a roll-call tally.
The commission also authorized county engineer Dylan Roberts to hire Steven Brewer as a countywide road-crew CDL and heavy-equipment operator at a starting rate of $12 per hour, effective Feb. 16, 2026. The motion to allow the engineer to hire was moved, seconded and approved; the recorded minutes do not show a vote tally.
County Engineer Dylan Roberts briefed commissioners on maintenance work. He said crews have started cutting right-of-way on Shake Rag Road and will continue south toward district one, and that a skid steer recently returned to service after a motor replacement. Roberts said striping is seasonal and availability of private striping contractors has been limited; he reported Fellowship Road had its stop bars and striping completed but that getting striping vendors to the county can be difficult.
Roberts and commissioners discussed the possibility of partnering with Shelton State to provide on-site commercial driver's license (CDL) training; Roberts said the college's program could come on site and that state legislators have provided some funding for training as an economic development tool. Officials said they will follow up and discuss options at an upcoming work session.
Other business: Emergency Management director Mr. Bristol said he submitted the fiscal-year 2026 EMP (Emergency Management Performance) application; county attorney Mr. Ryan reported he responded to an insurance company about a damaged vehicle and is awaiting a resolution; and the Chair announced the courthouse and affiliated offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 16, 2026 for the Presidents' Day federal holiday.
A motion to adjourn was moved and seconded and the meeting was adjourned.
