Colonel Matthew Porter (Joint Base Cape Cod executive director) introduced the briefing and described initial work on a containment‑area master plan. Lieutenant Colonel Alex McDonough, deputy commander at Camp Edwards and base operations manager, said the National Academies of Sciences has approved funding for a consensus study to examine constituents from small‑arms ranges (lead, copper, antimony) and to assess contaminant transport and mitigation approaches. McDonough said the study is expected to run about 18 months and will include public‑input opportunities.
Colonel Mike Kelly (commander, 102nd Mission Support Group, Otis ANGB) outlined Air National Guard missions and said his office can put the board in touch with Air Force IRP staff regarding PFAS remediation questions. Major Ron Miller (deputy commander, Cape Cod Space Force Station) and a Coast Guard representative provided brief updates on Space Force and Coast Guard missions and local activity; the Coast Guard noted medevac and search‑and‑rescue operations and ongoing community engagement.
Board members thanked service members and asked for follow‑up on PFAS engagement and a future in‑depth briefing on specific water‑quality and remediation efforts. McDonough said the National Academies project will include public meetings and formal releases and that the base is coordinating with state agencies and town staff on outreach.
The board welcomed the invitation for site tours and requested that staff coordinate future briefings on study timelines and PFAS/IRP contacts.
