Jackson County commissioners approve letter supporting SS4A planning grant

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners approved a letter of support for the county’s application to the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Planning Grant program during a May 5, 2026 work session.
Steve Lambert, director of the Roads and Parks Department, and James Philp, county engineer, told commissioners the department intends to use potential grant funds to develop a Traffic Safety Action Plan (TSAP) aimed at addressing increasing transportation stress and reducing serious crashes as the county grows. Lambert and Philp asked the Board to provide a letter of support to accompany the SS4A planning grant application.
Commissioner Randy Sparacino moved to approve the letter as presented; Commissioner Rick Dyer seconded. Both commissioners voted aye and the motion passed. Commissioner Colleen Roberts was listed as absent from the meeting.
Why it matters: SS4A planning grants fund safety planning work that can prioritize infrastructure investments and identify projects intended to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on roadways. A Board letter of support strengthens an application by signaling local commitment; the TSAP, if developed, would return to the Board for formal approval before any projects are funded or constructed.
