Jay County approves EDIT funding for local programs, halves HSE request

In a Feb. 20 special session, Jay County commissioners agreed to fund multiple EDIT requests: half of a $70,000 HSE request ($35,000), $10,000 for Fourth of July fireworks split among local groups, $15,000 for Arts Place, and $3,000 for the SBDC; Launch! Jay was deferred at the applicant nd fair/4-H funding was tabled.
Jay County commissioners met in a special session on Feb. 20 to review EDIT requests for 2025 and approved several allocations for local programs. Rusty Inman, director of the John Jay Center for Learning, requested $70,000 for the HSE program; after discussion commissioners suggested funding half of that request and agreed to provide $35,000.
The commissioners also approved $10,000 for Fourth of July fireworks to be distributed as $5,000 to the Jay County 4th of July Committee and $2,500 each to the Redkey Fireworks Committee and the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department. Carolyn Carducci, executive director of Arts Place, asked for $15,000 for Arts in the Park and the board approved the full amount. Judy Porter, regional director for the East Central Indiana Small Business Development Center, requested $3,000 for free public business services and the commissioners agreed to fund that amount.
A request from Launch! Jay for a $15,000 pitch-competition award was deferred at the applicant nd a request to consider additional funding for the Jay County Fair Association and Jay County 4-H was tabled pending possible OCRA grant eligibility and 4-H fundraising results. The Jay County Chamber of Commerce (Zach Chenoweth) said its original request of $25,000 may be revised pending dues collection and hiring of a new director; commissioners asked the chamber to return with an updated application.
Doug Horn moved to approve the amounts as previously discussed; Duane Monroe seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The special session adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
