Walden trustees vote to dissolve trustee liaison program

The Village of Walden Board of Trustees voted to dissolve the longstanding trustee liaison assignments after a split debate about the role’s value and potential interference with daily operations.

Trustee John Ramos and several board members argued that liaison duties can conflict with the village manager’s role overseeing department heads and that trustees should route operational questions through the manager. Ramos said the board had awaited more information on the issue and favored eliminating the program until the village’s governance needs are clearer. "I kind of concur that we should eliminate the liaison program," he said during the discussion.

Trustee Willie Carly and Trustee Cheryl defended the liaison structure as a community- and learning-focused practice. Carly said he saw value in the program: "I think it's a value to the community and to the board if we work together… it's a sounding board and a great learning experience for trustees." Lynn also noted concern about stepping into staff work but acknowledged community outreach benefits.

After discussion, a motion to dissolve the trustee liaison assignments was made, seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. Board members recorded a majority in favor and two opposed. The board did not adopt a replacement structure at the meeting, and trustees said they expect the village manager to continue as the principal contact for department matters.

The vote ends the formal liaison assignments but does not prevent trustees from attending department meetings or participating in community outreach, the board noted. The decision took effect immediately; trustees said they would monitor how information is conveyed to the board going forward.
