Monee trustees hear string of retail and redevelopment updates, demolition plans

The Village of Monee’s Board of Trustees received a progress update on local economic development at its April 23 meeting, with officials reporting several retail and redevelopment projects under way.
Economic Development Director Bill Barnes and Trustee Wilson reported that construction for Dollar Tree and Starbucks on Manhattan/Monee Road is progressing and that Starbucks has hired at least 10 employees and is recruiting additional staff. Interior work for a Subway franchise is underway and expected to open this summer, officials said.
Trustee Wilson described a broader approach of acquiring and demolishing older buildings to prepare sites for future commercial use, including recent purchases along Governor’s Highway and Manhattan Road. The board also received a status update on Town Center Phase One and a plat/subdivision motion related to Town Center that was approved during the meeting.
“Demolition of other buildings purchased along Manhattan Road and Gracie Avenue will take place throughout the summer,” Trustee Wilson said, framing the effort as part of a longer-term redevelopment strategy.
Officials encouraged residents to visit the village website for employment details and said additional redevelopment activity, including a potential Tractor Supply project, will be announced when finalized.
No regulatory or incentive decisions were made beyond motions authorizing plats and dedications that were approved earlier in the meeting; trustees asked for and received contact information for economic-development staff for follow-up questions.
