Michael Snograss, CEO of OOS Development Corporation, updated the Pahokee City Commission on Sept. 23 on the Everglades Townhomes affordable‑housing project, saying a new general contractor and permit‑holder have resumed active work.
"If you've been by the site for the last couple weeks, you've noticed a lot more activity," Snograss said. He reported 15–25 workers on site, anticipated completion of underground utilities within roughly two weeks and interior work cycles that should put individual buildings about 60 days from interior completion once framing inspections are finished. "We expect the full project to be done within about 90 days. We're shooting for the end of the year," he said.
Snograss said any vendors with valid contracts who had outstanding invoices were identified and have been paid, and that the project team wants the commission’s input on language for a proposed monument at the hospital entryway. On occupancy he said priority will be given to farm laborers—"anybody that's working at any of the sugar mills or any of the farm related activities"—because USDA rental assistance tied to the project requires farm‑labor priority; if those units are not filled, the units could be opened to the public.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about eligibility and about broader plans for the central parcel of the site; Snograss said funding changes had removed prior Head Start plans for the center and that the developer will return with proposals for that middle area after completing the townhome buildings. The presentation was added to the agenda as an add-on and received no public opposition during the meeting.
