LSC approves Boy Scout permit with conditions, allows open campfire away from trees

The Land Stewardship Committee voted unanimously to approve a Boy Scout land‑use permit for a founders‑day event planned for Feb. 22, allowing an open campfire provided it is located away from tree canopy and cleaned up afterward.

Wether Brown, speaking for the troop, described plans for roughly 15–20 participants and said the troop would contain fires and remove debris. Members asked that the troop prefer a fire pit for containment but accepted an open campfire if sited in the cleared area and away from trees.

“Given the time of year, we would bring our own firewood and contain everything within that,” Brown said when asked about cleanup. Committee members pressed for specifics about location and expressed the expectation that the troop would leave no trace.

The permit motion—moved by Warren and seconded by Chris—passed by unanimous roll call. The LSC recorded conditions: the fire must be located away from tree canopy, contained, and cleaned up; the troop must follow any additional town safety or permitting steps required by the fire department.

This decision addresses safety and stewardship concerns while allowing the troop to hold a daytime ceremonial event.
