Trustees ask for pay-comparison data as board member costs rise

Trustee Mr. Cunningham told the policy committee on June 1 that rising costs and frequent meetings mean the board should reexamine its compensation for members.
"I think that we need to look at the boards are getting uh a little bit more compensated because things are going up," he said, asking the committee to consider an increase or a different proration structure for per-meeting pay.
Board counsel recommended the committee review the board-association benchmarking list and report back. "I can send it to you," counsel said, noting that roughly two-thirds of school boards in the state pay members in some form and that rates vary.
Committee members agreed the benchmarking would be useful and set a follow-up: counsel will send comparative data and staff will return with a recommendation for the committee and for first reading at the June 30 board meeting if appropriate.
No motion to change compensation was made at the June 1 meeting; the committee requested comparable-district pay data to inform any future proposal.
