BASD previews ParentSquare pilot to centralize school communications; board asks about training and third-party apps

District staff presented a plan June 1 to adopt ParentSquare as the district’s centralized communications platform, including an early free access pilot and integration with the student information system so families can receive texts or app notifications without separate sign-ups.

Staff described features intended to reduce message fatigue: a daily digest option (an evening summary of messages), role-based toggles for parents who are also district employees, and optional features such as ParentSquare Pay (zeroed out in the initial quote) that the district does not plan to enable immediately. Mr. James led demonstrations for stakeholder groups and said the product committee selected ParentSquare after reviewing multiple vendors.

Board members asked practical questions about rollout and coexistence with sport- and activity-specific platforms such as TeamSnap and Cuttime that handle schedules, inventory and position-specific workouts. Staff acknowledged those apps have specialized functions and said the district will work with athletic and music directors to enable interoperability and a reasonable implementation timetable; they expect to require ParentSquare for K–5 classroom messaging first and to allow a longer runway for high-school athletics.

The vendor is offering early, no-cost pilot access before a formal contract start date; staff said they will seek formal board approval at the end of the month. Staff also committed to parent-facing how-to materials, videos and summer training for teachers to ease the transition.

Next steps: staff will pilot ParentSquare in the summer programs and return to the board for formal contract approval and a phased rollout plan that includes parent outreach and training.
