Residents raise concerns about mining tailings and water at Apache Junction meeting

At the June 2 Apache Junction meeting’s call to the public, a resident identified as John Carpache voiced concerns about water and dust from the Resolution Copper mining area and said tailings can contain arsenic and uranium that may become airborne during dust storms.
“Just to say that this water contains arsenic, uridium, and uranium…they need to have those loads covered properly when transporting all those tailings because that stuff can get in the air every time there’s a dust storm and it can cause cancer,” the resident said.
Another speaker using the name Noah (or Nate) James Markham spoke broadly about encouraging local building and raised several community topics including gender diversity in public safety roles, light-rail interest and gun storage concerns. Markham said he supports additional building in Apache Junction and thanked the council for work on water issues.
The council did not respond in detail to the call to the public comments during the meeting; Mayor Wilson adjourned the session after the public remarks.
