Commission discusses nation’s 250th preparations, plaque program and Liberty Tree dedication

The Westminster Historic District Commission used part of its meeting to discuss citywide preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary and related heritage activities.
Commission staff described a business and residential decoration contest with registration deadlines and judging plans; six entries had been received at the time of the meeting. Staff also reported progress on a plaque program (renderings and letters) and said the social-media campaign is planned for June.
On ceremonial matters, the commission discussed the Liberty Tree plaque and the Maryland Liberty Tree dedication and Flag Day program scheduled at Mount Olivet Cemetery on June 14; commissioners considered whether a ground plaque or a post would best suit the city’s tree-site and planned a post-meeting site visit to the Liberty Tree location.
Staff said the implementation-plan draft for the commission’s work is expected to be complete by mid-month and that the state agreement for the plan has been signed. Commissioners agreed to assist with neighborhood outreach and with finalizing the plaque letters and placement details.
No formal votes on the plaque program or event attendance were recorded during this portion of the meeting; staff asked commissioners to keep the August 16 date on their calendars for a forthcoming plaque ceremony and to provide feedback on plaque placement and design.
