Commissioners appoint Robert BBY as constable for Precinct 2

The Newton County Commissioners Court voted on Dec. 18 to appoint Robert BBY as constable for Precinct 2, effective Jan. 1, 2025, to fill a vacancy created when the previous constable resigned and moved out of the county.
Judge Greer proposed the appointment and said he had reviewed certified candidates and consulted with local law enforcement. “I asked him and he come back later and gave me an answer yes — that’s how I come about you see,” the judge said when describing the selection process. The sheriff addressed the court and said he saw the appointment as a service-oriented choice: "I was to ask in third and my DNA is all about service and it is something that I feel I could help the county... I'm looking forward to it," Robert BBY said.
The motion to appoint was made from the bench, seconded by Commissioner White, and carried. The record shows one commissioner abstained from the vote in deference to precinct representation.
Next steps: BBY's appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2025, and will remain in place until the next applicable election cycle, at which point the seat will appear on the ballot (the court discussed the next general election timing as 2026).
