Commission to study Riverfront Entertainment District; will consult state alcohol regulator

The commission agreed to further study a proposed Riverfront Entertainment District, with a commissioner volunteering to research the enabling law and consult the state excise officer about licensing and operational limits.

A commissioner said the district could let restaurants and the local theater offer beer and wine during performances and create a managed entertainment area, but emphasized uncertainty about whether those licensed establishments could also participate in a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA). "I want to understand how restrictive we can be," the commissioner said, and asked to consult the state officer who handles Fulton County for examples and lessons learned.

Commissioners discussed forming a rules and management committee to draft the district’s operating rules before any final decision. The initiative aims to support additional restaurants and to allow staged alcohol service in performance venues, but the commission emphasized it needs legal and regulatory guidance before moving forward.
