The Marquette County Judicial & Public Safety Committee voted June 5 to amend Chapter 50 of the county code by changing the age referenced in the local ordinance from 18 to 17 to bring the ordinance into alignment with state law.
A committee member explained that recent case handling showed 17-year-olds were being treated as adults under state statute, producing dismissals when local language still referenced age 18. Committee members agreed the change was necessary to avoid future dismissals of curfew or related ordinance cases and moved and approved the amendment by voice vote.
What's next: The committee approved the Chapter 50 amendment at the meeting; staff will take steps to update the county code text to reflect the new age reference.
