Tree Board recommends adding stream-buffer layer to KCD canopy map; motion passes

At a reconvened portion of the Tree Board meeting, members reviewed the King County/Planet (KCD) tree-plotter layers and debated whether to add rivers/streams or stream-buffer geographies to improve identification of low-canopy areas. The additional stream-buffer layer would expand the map’s coverage around waterways and help the city prioritize off-site mitigation in low-canopy neighborhoods.
One member moved that the Tree Board recommend the city request adding the stream-buffer layer to the KCD project and dedicate the required $500 from the board’s KCD funds; another member seconded the motion. The board approved the recommendation by voice vote. Kyle Gati, a board member, stated he had reviewed the discussion and “is in support of it.”
Board members noted the KCD setup costs are one-time (the $500 is a one-time setup fee to add a new layer to the interactive map) and that the board’s KCD jurisdictional funds had the balance necessary to pay the fee. Members asked staff to follow up with their contacts at KCD (and to confirm queue status) and to place the item on the July meeting agenda if additional action is needed.
Because the board made an official recommendation rather than exercising direct budget authority, staff said the practical next step is for city staff (community development or the city administrator) to confirm that the funds can be dedicated and to instruct KCD to add the stream-buffer layer.
