County approves emergency replacement of Winnie site compactor; additional electrical work remains

Chambers County Commissioners Court on June 9 approved emergency procurement steps to replace a failed compactor at the Winnie solid waste site after staff reported an electrical condition that made the existing machine unsafe.
Deb (solid waste staff) told the court the compactor could not be repaired and the power had been cut; the replacement compactor was ordered to allow immediate work to proceed. She said the installation will occur in two visits: disassembly of the old compactor and installation/training on the new unit. The purchase price discussed in court for the compactor was $48,825; additional electrical work to move service and install new lines was estimated at about $80,000 and will be brought back to the court for approval.
Commissioners said the condition posed a safety risk and supported moving quickly; staff noted they had emergency purchase authorization and would use leftover generator funds to cover part of the cost and then place the item on a future consent agenda for formal approval.
The court approved the purchase and directed staff to order needed parts and proceed with emergency work so the compactor replacement and electrical repairs can proceed promptly.
