Commissioners approve $1.47 million Optimal Tek contract for district-wide school intercom/PA system

The Transylvania County Board of Commissioners on May 26 approved a $1,473,449.49 contract between Transylvania County Schools and Optimal Tek for a district-wide intercom, PA, and bell system intended to improve campus safety.
Superintendent Dr. Lisa Fletcher told the Board that three schools currently have intercom systems that are not functioning adequately and that the Optimal Tek turnkey IP solution will integrate with the district’s Centegix system to enhance security. The Board of Education had approved the contract at its May 18 meeting.
The vendor was selected through a weighted evaluation process and received the highest overall score among proposals, according to the Manager’s presentation. The project will be funded with bond proceeds under Scope 1, which includes allowances for school safety and security system improvements, and staff indicated installations could be completed before the start of the fall semester.
Commissioner Jake Dalton moved to approve the contract and authorize staff to execute the agreement on behalf of the County. Commissioner Chase McKelvey seconded the motion, and the Board voted unanimously to approve the contract. Commissioner Larry Chapman noted the investment reflects the county’s commitment to student safety and ongoing support for school resource officers.
