Walla Walla County codifies disaster declaration after weekend floods

The Walla Walla County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a disaster declaration to formalize emergency actions taken during the March 20—26 flood event. Chair Todd Kimball said he had already signed an emergency declaration Saturday and the board codified that action so the county could "track labor, material and other costs" and pursue reimbursement.

Commissioners and staff thanked public works, emergency management, the sheriff's office and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for response and diversion efforts that protected downtown areas. Public Works reported road closures (Scott Road, Biscuit Ridge, 7-Mile bridge concerns) and erosion that will require inspection and consultant evaluation; county staff said they are documenting hours and materials from the weekend for possible FEMA reimbursement.

The board also approved payroll action forms and then entered executive session to discuss potential and pending litigation and bargaining.

What happens next: Public Works will continue assessment and documentation for FEMA and will coordinate design consultants for bridge repairs as needed; commissioners will receive follow-up status reports.
