The Wrangell Borough Assembly on May 12 approved a package of routine and ordinance items, including consent agenda approvals, property sale authorizations, and code changes.
Consent items approved included the April 14 meeting minutes and Resolution No. 05‑26‑2050 moving the May 2027 sales tax‑free day from May 1 to May 8, and the renewal of Happycannabis License #10200. The Assembly also approved proceeding with a purchase by current leaseholder Richard Kaer of Borough‑owned leased tidelands (staff asked the Assembly to waive the premium) and moving forward with the sale of portions of "A" Street and Cassiar Street at the request of Frank Warfel.
On code changes, the Assembly approved Ordinance No. 1101, amending Chapter 5.08 (sales tax), and agreed to add two amendments recommended by staff: an exemption for nonprofit organizations and an exemption for fundraising activities following a request from resident Joan Sargent. The Assembly also adopted Ordinance No. 1100 to establish a local business license registry beginning July 1 and provided that an application could include a checkbox to indicate a state or local license exemption.
Multiple other resolutions were approved on polled votes, including a joint resolution supporting coordinated use of hydroelectric resources from the Tyee Lake project, adoption of the Southeast Alaska Landslide Risk Reduction Strategic Plan, amendments to union and non‑union job descriptions and pay tables, and several budget amendments and loan acceptances tied to McKinnon Street rehabilitation and a subdivision lot sale.
