Board starts review of Internet Access & Use Policy; staff to return revised draft in June

May 13, 2026

The board began a review of the library's Internet Access & Use Policy (last updated 2013). Proposed revisions include updated terminology, separating policy and procedure, references to CIPA, staff unblocking authority, AI considerations, and device/printing rules; staff will draft a revision for June.

The full story

Library Director Julie Phillips told trustees the Internet Access & Use Policy, last revised in 2013, needs updating and that staff propose changes to terminology concerning personal devices, a clearer separation between policy and procedure, and the addition of references to applicable statutes such as the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Trustees discussed how filtering accuracy should be handled, whether staff should have formal authority to grant unblocking requests, how to incorporate AI‑related considerations and how printing and mobile device use should be managed (for example, time limits based on availability rather than fixed intervals).
