'Unearth a Story': Botetourt libraries launch May 18 Summer Reading Challenge with Beanstack option

At the May 13 meeting the board heard details of the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, themed 'Unearth a Story.' Blue Ridge Branch Manager Jaime Duval said the program will run May 18 through July 25 and will emphasize building a daily reading habit: participants mark each day they read rather than logging minutes or number of books. Tracking options include paper reading logs and the Beanstack digital platform.
Duval outlined participant incentives: children will receive a door hanger, magnetic bookmark, a reading log and a ticket to Salem RidgeYaks 'Dino Night.' Additional incentives include brag tags and entries into branch‑level, Beanstack‑specific and grand prize drawings. Program highlights scheduled at branches include tie‑dye workshops, Larson's Lizards and DinoQuest Adventures. Duval and trustees discussed program costs, partnerships and the Friends of the Library's role in supporting incentives and events.
Duval also reported that the Beach Reads To‑Go initiative distributed 34 themed bags at Blue Ridge last week.
Next steps: staff will proceed with program rollout beginning May 18 and coordinate partner support and Friends' fundraising for incentives.
