Code Enforcement officers Jason Adams and Stephanie Brown presented proposed revisions to the county nuisance code on June 9, suggesting removal of the term 'unlicensed' from the vehicle code because of enforcement difficulty related to expired tags, and allowing fitted car covers as an alternative to carports or garages. They also proposed aligning the county tree code with city standards to reduce confusion for property owners.
Steve Lewis (identified in attendance as part of the Sheriff's Office and subsequently referred to as Lt. Lewis in discussion) and Commissioner Nichols cautioned that removing the 'unlicensed' wording could diminish enforcement tools, make it harder to detect stolen vehicles and could lead to more complaints about junkyards. Commissioner DeGroot asked staff to forward the proposed vegetation/tree changes to local fire chiefs for review to ensure the changes would not increase fire risk; staff member Andrew agreed to do so.
The Board indicated that it would consider approving the tree and grass code changes if the vehicle/car portion were removed and directed staff to revise and resubmit the proposal following feedback from the fire chiefs and other stakeholders. No formal vote was recorded on the nuisance-code package at this meeting.
