Decatur County Community Schools board unanimously approves continuation of Girls Inc. program

The Decatur County Community Schools board voted 7-0 on June 5 to approve continuation of the Girls Inc. program after a presentation by Amy Dillon, president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Shelby County. The board convened at the central office in Whitesburg.
Dillon told the board the organization has partnered with the district since 2018 to deliver puberty and hygiene lessons to fourth- and fifth-graders and reproductive-health and healthy-relationships lessons to seventh- and eighth-graders. "My name is Amy Dillon. I'm the president CEO of Girls Inc. of Shelby County," she said. "For the past several years we've delivered puberty and hygiene program for fourth and fifth graders at both elementary schools and then in the seventh and eighth grade arena we have delivered reproductive health and healthy relationships." She said documents required by a new state statute were provided to the district before the meeting.
Board member Ms. Walker, who introduced the presenter, said she had observed lessons and supported the program. "The program is really good. I actually sat through a couple lessons this year at both junior highs and I was really impressed with it," she said during discussion.
Following the presentation, a motion to approve the program carried unanimously, 7-0. The board provided no additional conditions in the meeting record. The approval allows Girls Inc. to continue delivering the described lessons in the coming school year under the terms and materials already submitted to the district.
The board did not record any public opposition during the public-comment period; no separate vote counts by individual board member were provided in the meeting minutes.
