The Waterloo Local School Board approved its December financial statements and heard highlights from the treasurer that showed a year-to-date loss of about $450,000 in the General and Emergency funds and an overall all-funds deficit of approximately $577,000. The treasurer said bond payments in November had affected cash timing and noted expense outliers that included a $25,000 fuel-management system upgrade and a $23,000 fence repair (the transcript indicates a third party is expected to reimburse the district for the fence expense).
On superintendent recommendations, trustees approved agreements with Youngstown State and Kent State (for student-teacher placements and College Credit Plus), LearnWell and an outsourced SLP (speech-language pathologist) services contract to meet student needs that the district has been unable to staff internally.
The board accepted the resignation of Jasmine Wilhelm effective Jan. 7 and approved issuance of substitute contracts to a list of individuals for the remainder of the school year; minutes note that some substitutes are recent graduates. Trustees also voted to accept a $500 donation from SAR Chevrolet for the district theater program.
Finally, the board approved a resolution to administer third-grade reading assessments in paper-and-pencil format next school year; administrators said there is no additional cost but orders must be placed now.
