Weed supervisor warns EPA changes may require permits for spraying near water

Scott Shuler, Caribou County Weed Supervisor, briefed the board on recent operations and regulatory changes.
Shuler said he met with the Highland group and requested funding for white-top extraction work on Thatcher and Blackfoot River Road. He reported that cloud-seeding is continuing but the cost of silver oxide has increased and he is seeking lower-cost suppliers.
Importantly, Shuler said changes from the Environmental Protection Agency may require a use permit for spraying when operations get close to water. He reported that staff and part-time summer employees will attend an Idaho Falls training on Dec. 27, 2011 to learn about the EPA changes, and that logbooks for 2011 and going forward will need to be updated to comply with the new rules.
