Mayor Arnold briefs commission on shared-use path options, pocket prairies and yearlong comprehensive-plan code audit

Mayor Arnold, sitting in for the absent council liaison, updated the Sustainability Commission on several active council matters and encouraged commissioners to provide input quickly where council must decide. On a proposed shared-use path running from Glendale to Watson Road along Elm, he said the council would "talk about whether to use an alternative design, the original design, or not go forward with the project," and urged residents with strong views to contact the council before the upcoming meeting.

On the pocket-prairies initiative, Arnold cautioned that the visible transition from grass to prairie is a multiyear process and that initial cover crops "look[] like big grass that's just been cut," which can cause public misunderstanding. He pointed commissioners to a video prepared by the public-affairs office explaining the process.

Arnold described the comprehensive-plan implementation as requiring a consultant-led code audit to make the city's zoning ordinance and other codes consistent with the plan. He said the audit and subsequent ordinance updates will likely take several months to a year to complete, and noted council is trying to phase changes so they do not receive hundreds of changes at the end of the process. He mentioned related initiatives such as a responsible-lighting ordinance already on the summer schedule and said some items will proceed before the consultant completes its work because staff capacity and practical needs require parallel work.

Arnold also previewed the council's imminent budget action and a second tranche of bond sales for Proposition W to fund remaining sustainability infrastructure. He invited commissioners to provide input on the shared-use path alternatives and other items on a quick turnaround ahead of the council meeting.
