Brown County adopts temporary $3-per-ton solid waste fuel surcharge

Chairman Lucas Heinen presented the proposal after staff reported higher fuel expenses for solid waste hauling. Heinen moved to implement the surcharge starting July 8, 2026 for a 90-day period, after which the board will reevaluate the surcharge; Commissioner Richard Tesoriero seconded the motion and it carried.
Commissioners discussed tonnage averages and the timing of any fee increases and directed staff to notify major haulers of the change. The board’s motion estimated the surcharge would recover roughly $3,500 in additional costs over the temporary period.
The surcharge will take effect July 8, 2026 and the board will review conditions after the 90-day period to determine whether to extend, adjust, or end the surcharge.
