Planning commission keeps lakeshore step width at 48 inches

Dickinson County planners considered a request from landscaping contractors to widen lakeshore steps from the ordinance standard of 48 inches to 6 feet to ease carrying of coolers and kayaks.
Megan Kardell said contractors had requested the change but the commission decided not to increase the width. Kardell noted the decision was made in part to protect the lakeshore bank and because the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has been tightening shoreline rules.
The commission declined the proposed change and retained the 48‑inch step-width standard in the current landscaping ordinance.
