Belfast council authorizes application for state live‑fire training facility grant

The Belfast City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 18 to authorize the economic development director and fire chief to apply for the Maine live‑fire training facilities grant program, which aims to expand regional training facilities to meet NFPA standards and reduce travel time for firefighters.
Economic development director Thomas Kittredge outlined the program and the state appropriation supporting it; the city is pursuing funding to purchase and install a 3,600‑square‑foot two‑story Conex box facility. Fire Chief Pat Richards said the public works site under city control is a favorable location because the land has been geotechnically evaluated as part of a public‑works project and is well‑located for multiple Waldo County departments to access training without long travel times.
Chief Richards said a local training option would help the city’s fire, EMS and police teams train on live burn scenarios, extrication and entry techniques. Bill Gillespie of the Waldo County Fire Chiefs Association spoke in support and described the statewide effort to distribute training facilities for regional coverage.
Councilors asked about facility type and rationale; the Conex option was described as delivering a larger training facility for less money and being relatively straightforward to replace at end of life. The council passed the motion to submit the grant application and to provide a funding match of up to $9,500 from capital funds as appropriate; the motion passed 5–0.
