Josephine County seeks $155,000 from Solid Waste Agency to restore abatement program

Finance Director Ruth Nelson told commissioners that the County had received approximately $155,000 annually in prior funding arrangements, prompting commissioners to ask whether the application amount represented annual funding or a total over three years. Commissioners said the application materials lacked clarity about the duration and structure of the funding.
Commissioner Colene Martin moved to approve submission of the grant request while seeking clarification from the Solid Waste Agency on whether $155,000 would be provided annually or as a three-year total. Commissioner Gary Richardson seconded. On a roll-call vote Commissioner Richardson voted yes, Commissioner Martin voted yes, and Commissioner Ron Smith voted yes; the motion carried 3-0.
Shaw also noted a pending personnel action related to restoring the solid-waste program, including filling a returning solid-waste specialist lead position; commissioners expressed support for proceeding with that personnel action once procedural and supplemental-budget requirements were met.
Next steps: staff will submit the grant application and seek clarification from the Solid Waste Agency on the funding timeframe before finalizing program restoration planning.
