Wakefield recreation reports mixed summer enrollment; some key programs down from last year

Recreation staff presented a detailed month-over-month review of program enrollments and said many offerings are seeing modest increases while some cornerstone programs are down from last year.

Dan, representing town recreation staff, said program snapshots show both gains and declines: the report cited that 54% of surveyed participants have used the recreation department while 47% said they are unaware of its offerings. He walked through specific counts: tennis was +10 month-over-month (34 participants), Brazilian soccer +6 (24), club weeks ranged from 58 to 72 with net positive trends, and soccer shots rose by 30 to 61 participants. At the same time, the summer safety program dropped from 120 participants last year to 81 this year; Dan suggested the July 4 holiday week and late school calendars may have contributed.

Staff emphasized flexibility: the department accepts daily drop-ins for families in a pinch, adjusts age ranges to keep programs running, and tries to accommodate special-needs participants (instructors are planning to make activities inclusive). Members asked whether enrollment dips affected budgeting; Dan said most program revenue is revolving (fees pay program costs) and that short-term dips do not immediately change next-year revenue projections.

The committee discussed outreach and noted that many residents register at the last minute; Dan said he expects signups to rise as school ends and upcoming weeks progress. Staff will continue to track registration numbers and report back if any program is at risk of cancellation.
